What is a speech pathologist?

Speech Pathologists are health professionals who assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. Their work supports individuals to improve their ability to speak, understand language, read, write, and interact socially, as well as manage feeding and swallowing issues.

Speech pathologists play a vital role in improving quality of life. By enhancing communication and addressing swallowing disorders, they empower individuals to participate fully in their communities, maintain dignity, and achieve their potential.

Some key areas speech pathologists can support include:

  • Language - understanding what is being said (receptive language) and expressing wants, needs and ideas (expressive language)
  • Articulation
  • Fluency
  • Voice
  • Social communication
  • Reading, writing, and spelling
  • Swallowing (dysphagia) and feeding
  • AAC
